Antarctic Lake Vostok yields 'new bacterial life'
The discovery of a brand new life form on this planet is definitely a very exciting news. It's a very humbling science that shows that despite all the technological advancements we made all this while, the world is still vast, filled with unknowns waiting for us to explore and discover. ^^
On the other hand, reading this piece of news really reminds me of John Carpenter's 1982 masterpiece "The Thing", obviously because of the similarity in location "setting". ^^ Even though the movie is sci-fi in nature featuring alien life forms (with tremendous special effects I should emphasize), I feel that the element of psychological terror of not knowing if the person right next to you may be a horrible creature ready to devour and assimilate you is the creepier part of that movie. I wonder if there are worries out there that the discovery of this new bacterial life might bring about new diseases mankind isn't ready for at the moment, which to some extend, mirrors the insecurity felt by the characters presented in "The Thing". ^^;
